I wonder if Jonathan would forgive me for the wreck I’ve made of his lectures. “It’s really a kind of thinking I want to get across,” he explained to me many times. I was totally ignorant of his field, and tended to sink into my own concerns as soon as he delved into any kind of detail. “I want them to be able to consider the world around them,” he said.

“Don’t they do that already?” I answered, looking through the used car flyer that had come with the mail. Whatever he said next, I hummed over it, flicking through the coarse newsprint, my husband six inches from me only a sort of form, a conjunction of balding, kindly good intentions I neither looked at nor contemplated. He had already become a background, the two of us locked into our routines, careful that our interactions didn’t cause too drastic a transformation. “What’s that you said, sweetie?” I asked him a few minutes later. He was already on his way into the kitchen, where the cat complained about her empty bowl.
